Subtitling Sophisticated Dorkiness

by Kim on October 22, 2008 · 13 comments

Yesterday afternoon I went to a seminar on “Productive and Professional Blogging” hosted by our campus writing center.  One thing that stuck out to me was the importance of titling and subtitling your blog.

Luckily for me, “Sophisticated Dorkiness” is a pretty decent blog title (I think, anyway).  However, if you check out my top picture you’ll notice there is no subtitle.  Nothing that explains what my blog is about, what I’m about, a little snapshot of why you should even bother to scroll down and look at a post.

So, I thought this would be a perfect time to use the new WordPress poll feature and get some thoughts on subtitles from people who read my blog.  Below are some of my ideas, please vote on which subtitle you like and leave other feedback in the comments as you see fit.

I’m not giving anything away just yet, merely asking for your help :-)   But I am getting close to my 100th blog post, so if you vote and leave a comment I’ll find a way to include the fact that you voted in whatever giveaway(s) I end up deciding to have for that celebration (at least one of them will be a gift certificate to an online store). Thanks!

I don’t think the name of my blog is too good, but I didn’t know what I was doing when I started it.

I think you should avoid the “grad student” options, since they will (hopefully) one day no longer apply.

Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself. :)

bermudaonion: I don’t think anyone really thinks about stuff like that when they just start out, which is why so many titles are weird. bermudaonion is unique enough that people remember it, at least I do :)

fyrefly: Good point — grad school seems so endless I didn’t even conceive what might happens when it ends! If I do go with one of those, maybe I’ll have to re-subtitle after I graduate to reflect my future profession.

“Readings, writings and aspirations of a quirky reporter.”

I think your choices are good – especially the 2nd and 3rd, yet I think just a touch more of something sophisticated and dorky might be needed.

“A journalist bookworm blogs on life, lit and the occasional oddity.”

I dunno, too much?

and wordpress might not allow another line – I don’t think mine does. and I shudder to do the same analysis on my blog name. Couldn’t be more boring, realy – egads!!

I keep thinking…

I’ll stop now. OH! how did you do the goodread link?

bkclubcare: Those are good suggestions, I’ll have to keep thinking about it. I just have an image for my top line, so I was just going to re-do it in Photoshop to add a second line, once I have time, which will be… sometime :)

If you go to this page — http://www.goodreads.com/review/widgets — in GoodReads (it’s a really tiny link at the top of the “My Books” page) you can add various links to GoodReads. I have the badge on my about me page, and linked to a version of the book think in one of the sidebars.

I really like those suggestions from bkclubcare. I voted for #3, but I think you should use “journalist” instead of “journalism” (even if you aren’t quite a journalist yet ;-) )

I really like the phrase “bookish musings.” Maybe combine that in to the “life and literature” one. I suspect we aren’t helping since we all have a different opinion!

bexadler: Good point, hopefully I will be a journalist soon :)

Rebecca: No, it is helping — I didn’t really like any of the ones I suggested, so it’s good to see what parts of each people think make sense. Pretty soon someone will say something that will click and we’ll be set!

Looks like I voted for the same one everyone else liked!

I’m not crazy about the name of my blog, I wish I’d taken longer to decide.

Lisa: Good, that means some sort of consensus. I think I’ll have the new top bar finished sometime soon. Blog names are hard, like I said, I think it was just sort of a lucky accident that I happen to like mine still.
