In terms of topic and message, I'd say that book would be a bigger influence for someone like Ehrenreich because Orwell finds his voice more in <i>Wigan Pier</i>. But I think in terms of form and the idea of immersing yourself in a story, <i>Down and Out</i> is a better exemplar. Who knows though, maybe I should just ask her myself :) chartroose: It's good nonfiction, just not my favorite ever. I'd love to hear what you think if you end up reading it! Orwell was one of the first literary journalists to do this sort of immersion journalism, so that's why this book is pretty important.
