Blog Improvement Project Week 3: Blog Post Bingo

by Kim on February 2, 2009 · 39 comments

2009BIP 150x210No wrap-up for Week Two, partially based on a suggestion from Elizabeth at Thoughts from an Evil Overlord that we check back in a few months to see how the regular features are going.  I think that’s smart, so we’ll do a wrap up of Week 2 sometime in the future.

Week 3 of the Blog Improvement Project is all about writing different kinds of content.  It’s easy to get into a pattern of writing the same kinds of posts over and over again, but sometimes it can be fun to spice it up, or at least have ideas about other ways to present your ideas.

I did a search about kinds of blog posts and came across many articles about kinds of blog posts: 20 Types of Blog Posts, The 5 Types of Blog Posts that Experts Write, and All 13 Types of Blog Post, just to link to a few.  What I learned in doing this was something I should have known in the first place — there are no definitive types of blog posts.  However, there are some types of posts that can be the bread and butter of a successful blogger, and knowing some of these forms can help if you feel like you’re in a rut.

Please read all the way through the task for this week so you can decide what level you want to participate at (and and find out about the fabulous prizes!).

Blog Post Bingo!

  • Take a look at the 10 types of blog post below.  Over the next two weeks, try to write as many of these different kinds of posts as you can.
  1. A Link Post – share a series of links your readers might find interesting
  2. A Short Post – less than 200 words
  3. A List Post – simple as it sounds, a list of some sort
  4. An Opinion Post – take an event, news, or another blog post and share your opinion on it
  5. A Poll or Question Post – post a poll or ask your readers a specific question for feedback
  6. A How-To Post – You’re an expert in something; big or small, share how to do it
  7. A Long Post – more than 700 words
  8. A Review Post – self-explanatory, I think :)
  9. A Definition Post – show your expertise about a topic related to your blog
  10. FREE SPACE – a type of post of your choice (that is not the same as one of the previous posts)
  • By Saturday, February 14 at MIDNIGHT, post a link in Mr. Linky to a wrap-up post detailing which of the post types you’ve completed.  I need to be able to go to the wrap up post and see links to each of the posts and something that shows what type they are.

The blogger who completes the most number of posts will receive a prize — a $10 e-gift certificate from Amazon.com and be featured in the wrap up post for Week 3.  I will also do a random number generator of all the other entries (whether you did one post or many posts) to choose a two other winners to be featured in the wrap up post.  This way, everyone has incentive to participate even if you can’t post a ton of times in the next couple weeks.  I know it’s not much, but who doesn’t love even little prizes?

Notes: Blog posts can count for multiple categories, but if there is a tie then I’ll give preference to the a blogger who has not counted posts for multiple categories.  If you’re only entering one post, no need for a wrap up post, just put it in the Mr. Linky.  You may not include posts written before this task was posted (it’ll just be too hard for me to sort through them, I think).

Any other questions or concerns?  Leave a comment and I’ll get back to you ASAP.  Good luck and happy blogging!

Great idea. It feels like a challenge within a challenge. Plus, it will be fun to try to get all ten.

Whew, I’m glad people are liking the challenge so far. I got really excited when the idea finally clicked together in my head yesterday afternoon, but wasn’t sure if other people would find it as cool as I did :)

I love this idea, Kim! I vary my topics, but I don’t worry about the length, and I do several memes, so even though the topics are different, readers know what to expect.

I must do a link post soon, because I’ve never done one. You’re right about spicing it up!

Hi!
Boy, that’s quite a list of things to do! Could this count as a list post! Just kidding! I am going to work on this one over the next 2 weeks.

I can see several of my regular features already fitting into these new change-ups. Another great idea galvanizer, Kim. My Blog Improvement Post will be up late tonight/early tomorrow.

Hi Kim, this post is awesome. I have often wondered whether I should post this or that. Since starting this process with you I have been a lot more aware of my post content. Now today you’ve have given me a list of what posts I have been posting. After reviewing the list, you have highlighted to me that I have been posting a majority of the posts you mentioned ie link posts, short posts, opinion posts, how to posts, long posts. So my challenge for this fortnight is to post the other posts that I know I have never done before. Thank you for keeping us inspired.

Great stuff! This is something I’m struggling with right now. First I had too many long posts, not I’ve been doing too many quickies.

Ooo, prizes! But what happens if more than one person does all the posts?

Reply

15 Kim February 3, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Anastasia: If more than one person does all 10, I’ll do the random number generator to pick a winner for the gift card, but mention everyone that finished in the wrap up post. That’s a good question, I thought of that but then forgot to write it in the post :)

Great idea! I think I really am in a rut, posting the same type of things all the time.

I’ll do my best to vary my blog content in the future!

Thanks for these ideas–I love them, and also the general idea that it’s good to vary your style, at least once in a while. Reading about this also encouraged me to participate in the “Interviewing Other Bloggers Meme,” which is up today at my blog (Necromancy Never Pays)–so if anyone wants questions, all you have to do is come and ask–I will make my questions like an “Opinion Post” on some theme for readers.

This is such a great post Kim. This information is really useful, I’ve been wondering about how to keep my blog posts from becoming too blah and your list will be a great help to me. Thanks :)

This is great. I am totally failing at posting on these topics so far–the blog goals are there in my head, but will they make it into a post? Anybody’s guess. I will try to do the multiple types of posting, though. Cool idea.

Thanks for the challenge, this should be fun! I am sorry to have missed the first couple of weeks, but I am back on track! Who knew there were so many different types of blog posts? :)

This one is really neat. I wish I could do a “wrap up” post from at least this month’s since I’ve done several of those already! Hahha :)

I can see I did not read the rules properly before starting out. I knew that I was “cheating” because I linked to a post which I wrote the day before your Bingo post, but I had not seen there were prizes.
So I have only made 9 of my 10 posts within the correct time span.
Anyway, it was a great challenge :)

I didn’t really pay attention to this one while it was going on, unfortunately. But I went back over my posts and I met almost half of the requirements. I know what I can work on now. I would really like to get into writing shorter posts, because I feel like I drone on a bit sometimes. Here’s my post on the topic:
