Great review!
And, oh my god, that cover. I'm glad someone else mentioned it because it drives me to distraction.
I'm really glad you liked this collection--particularly because it didn't do anything AT ALL for me (and I was so disappointed). So I can't wait to talk more about it!

Hey, yeah, I was just examining those disturbing nostrils on the cover. She must've used Mickey Rourke's plastic surgeon!

That's a really good point. A couple of the stories in this collection, "The Tower" (where they try to build a tower to heaven) and "The Wizard of West Orange" (where a man tries to simulate the sense of touch), reminded me a bit of fairy tales or allegories.

I think it's also easier to suspend your disbelief about the quirkiness for a short time; if the stories were longer you might get lost in them.

I agree, the cover is annoying. Happily, the copy I got from the library had the dust jacket removed, so it just looked like a normal book.

This is a fun collection, you should consider it for your short story goal.

I am also not really a short story reader, but you said the magic word: quirky. I feel like slightly fantastical plots and ideas always lend themselves a bit better to short stories. Perhaps because they remind me of being young and reading fairytales?

Strange? I like strange...but that nose on the cover is seriously bothering me.

Great review. One of my goals for this year is to read more short stories.
