The Sunday Salon: Watchmen and Women's History

The Sunday Salon.comIt’s been a quiet week here at the blog, but that’ s because I just needed a break from blogging.  I just couldn’t think of much to write about, so I figured I’d just not write anything. In place of blogging, I got a lot of other things done.  I finished reading Dangerous Laughter by Steven Millhauser, started a science fiction book called Remake by Connie Willis. I’m not sure what I think of it so far — it’s a little pushy for my taste — but I’ll probably finish it because the story is pretty entertaining.

Boyfriend and I also went to see Watchmen at the IMAX last night, and despite the lukewarm reviews I enjoyed it.  The plot and character development through the first half was excellent, but things seemed to fall apart a bit near the end.  The climax was actually not the best part of the movie, I think, but the resolution was well-played and did justice to what I remember from reading the comic last semester.  The music was great too — there were a lot of song choices that just made me laugh.  Having upbeat music was a relief too, because the movie is over-the-top violent in some sections, violent enough that I had to look away.  But even with those things,  I still liked the movie, and am going to give the comic another once over after I get it back from my sister.

I also decided to join the Women’s History Month mini-challenge that Lu at Regular Rumination is holding.  I’m hesitant to join challenges, but since this one is only three books, I have a lot of hours to fill on planes next week, and I have a lot of TBR books by women authors to finish, I decided I’m in.  Here are the books I’m choosing between for the challenge:

  • Remake by Cornelia Willis
  • The Magician’s Book by Laura Miller
  • I Heard There’d Be Cake by Sloan Crosley
  • The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood
  • The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean
  • Any other books that happen to come my way

Anyway, this is the last week of class before spring break, and I am very excited.  I have a lot to get done, but one week from now I’ll be hanging out in San Francisco with my sister and old friends.  Can’t wait 🙂

Women´s history sounds like a good challenge. I am not going to join any more, though, because with BIP and Weekly Geeks and all the great ideas I get when I zap around on other people´s fascinating blogs there is quite enough to see to without it 😉

I enjoyed Watchmen, too; the music was amazing. I loved “Hallelujah” especially. 🙂

Glad you liked Watchmen as well. I wanted to buy the soundtrack… but then hubby and I realized we had most of the songs already.

Despite the lukewarm reviews, this movie got me into the theatre, and I do not see violent movies in the theatre, like ever. I was not a watcher of Sin City or 300 or other movies like that.
