Weekly Geeks 2009.12: Book Review Link Exchange

wg-relaxing-url5This week’s Weekly Geek challenge is a revival of one of my favorite previous activities, the book review link exchange. I’m excited because doing the link exchange was, I think, when I first found Weekly Geeks.  Basically, the challenge to let your readers know that you have a link exchange policy, show them your archives, then find some reviews that you can use.

I’ve been pretty negligent about this lately, so I’m glad we’ve got the project this week to get back on track. My goal for the week is to work on new links to all of the books I’ve read and reviewed in 2009 and include a sentence about the link exchange policy at the bottom of my reviews. Here are a few of the resources I plan to use in trying to find reviews:

  • Beta Book Blogs Search by Rebecca at Rebecca Reads: This is another search engine created by a favorite book blogger. When she first posted about it, Rebecca aske for some help, so check out her post for more information. EDITED TO ADD: Rebecca doesn’t plan to update this search engine anymore and has deferred to Fyrefly’s. You can still access it at the link, but it won’t be as current.
  • Saturday Review of Books hosted by Sherry at the Semicolon Blog: Every Saturday there is a post where people can include their book reviews from the week. If you check the Saturday Reviews page, you can also look through a ton of past reviews by title. Although not quite as easy as a search engine, this would be a great way to find more blogger reviews.

I hope that these resources will be helpful for other people too!  Also, I’d like to reiterate something that Nymeth said in her post on this topic: don’t be afraid to leave links for people. I’m always nervous about this because I feel like I’ll look pushy, but I know that I’m always happy to add links to reviews if I somehow missed them. Be assertive about your blog and reviews and you’ll get yourself out there!

Finally, here is the link to an archive of all the books I’ve reviewed.  They are arranged, generally, by genre and the alphabetically by title. I think they are pretty self-explanatory, but if you have suggestions about how to improve my archives, please let me know!

I guess we’re all secretly afraid of the same thing. We have these two in common: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay and The Time Traveler’s Wife.

Kim – I’ve linked your review of Dangerous Laughter to mine. Mine’s here:

    Thanks for the link.

We don’t seem to share much in common Kim, but if you ever read any crime fiction, or Agath Christie in particular, think of me. Thanks for the links to the other customised searches. I have created a crime fiction one, inspired by Firefly’s post about the one she created

Your review archive is very easy to navigate. Guess that’s why you got the big pink bow…!

I left a link to my review of The Gravedigger’s Daughter on your review. I enjoyed reading your review. I’ve also read Saturday, my favourite McEwan, but I didn’t review it. I do have a copy of Ella Minnow Pea that I must read now. Your list of reviews was easy to navigate, thank you.

Thank you for the links to the search engines – I hadn’t come across them before.

We don’t have many books in common, but I’ve added a comment to your Kavalier and Clay review.

Thanks for all the links. Sheesh…I wish I’d known about those sooner. 🙂

I love the set-up of your archives!

  • Fyrefly March 29, 2009, 11:43 am

Thanks for plugging the search engine; much appreciated!

We don’t share a lot of books other than Fables… well, we do share a lot of books, but they’re books I read before I started reviewing on my blog, so the link exchange is not so useful. 🙂

Kim, I’m deferring to Fyrefly’s blog and I won’t be updating my google custom search. I just do not have time! It’s essentially the same thing (google custom search) and Fyrefly’s is already much more comprehensive!

I didn’t see anything in common except for Gods Behaving Badly, which I still have to review, but I loved it too. Thanks for the links listed above!

You have reviewed some great books. A lot of them I haven’t gotten around to yet. Maybe soon we”l have some reviews in common.

  • Jeanne April 3, 2009, 11:33 am

Thanks for saying to be assertive. I really wasn’t sure if it was polite to leave an unsolicited link in someone else’s comment thread.

Hi Kim, I’ve linked to the following review:

    Twilight (http://readingadventures.blogspot.com/2006/07/twilight-by-stephenie-meyer.html).

We do have a couple of other reviews in common but we have already linked to them.
