i just want to mention that i’ve recently gotten a huge increase in comments and i think it’s because i moved from blogger to wordpress. it’s just so much easier to leave a comment on wordpress blogs.

This topic fit very well with this week’s “Musing Monday” question, so I answered them both together in one post.

Skimming the comments here, I agree with one of the things Rebecca said – comments from traffic-driving special events like contests are different from those left by people who actually read your blog regularly.

Great discussion – which is kind of the point, isn’t it ?

Yes, this has had a lot of good comments. I’m sure lurkers are most of the search engine traffic — unless the post really inspires them they’re probably coming to the conversation late and don’t have much incentive to contribute.

And agree on the type of comments; BIP week 8 is going to be about leaving good comments on other blogs. Competitions bring a lot of impersonal comments, but hopefully those people will stick around your blog for a bit (at least to see the winner) and maybe become a useful commenter. Hard to say though, I’m sure it depends on the person.

I completely agree with 3 — barriers to commenting frustrate me to no end (especially during something like the Read-a-Thon). I don’t think I’ve ever commented on a blog where I had to register, although I’ve gotten used to word verification.

Also, 4 is a good tip too. I started doing a “what should I read this month” poll, which was pretty successful and fun to do.
