The Random Reading Challenge

RandomReadingChallenge Wendy at CaribousMom is hosting the Random Reading Challenge, which is a challenge to bring back some of the spontaneity of reading by having a challenge without a list.

Participants can choose to read six, nine, or 12 books between August 1, 2009 – July 31, 2010 and the books need to be chosen randomly following some instructions on the challenge page. Being sort of a wuss, and not entirely sure what my school schedule will be like this fall, I’m going to try the six book option.

Regular dorky readers know that I’m not much of a reading challenge person — I just don’t like having lists about what I have to read and so generally fail challenges or resent having to finish them. On the other hand, the number of unread books at my apartment is getting out of control and I feel like I should do something about that.

You see, I’ve acquired a lot of new books lately because of my internship. There’s a perpetually growing pile of free books lying around that are just too temping to ignore. This challenge seems like a good way to try and take down the growing pile.

I decided to only use books that I own — currently on my TBR shelves — not books I have in a pile from the library or borrowed from other people.

In the spirit of getting right into it, I already did the random number generator to pick my next book. The first book for the challenge happens to be one I got from the free book pile — Love Stories In This Town by Amanda Eyre Ward

Want to join? Head over to the challenge page to learn more and sign up!

Heard anything about this book (because I know nothing about it, other than I loved the cover and summary)? Are you a random book reader, or do you like to organized and schedule your reading ahead of time?

Nope, don’t know anything about that book. Good luck with the challenge.

Random Reading Challenge = BRILLIANT! I miss the spontaneity of wondering in a casual way, what book I will read next. It’s like letting a book find YOU instead of the other way around.

I don’t know anything about this book, but do explain more how the random number generator FOUND this book? it was a number 3 and it was the third book on the pile?

I haven’t heard of that book but like the cover art. I’m doing the challenge, too, for the same reason–so many books in the TBR pile. If I can do a challenge that won’t force me to pick up any other books, I’m all over that one!

First of all, I just joined the challenge tonight to get out of my very structured reading rut. Second of all, sadly, I know nothing about your first book pick.
Thirdly, you have one more book to add to your tbr pile as you won my give-away for the memoir tilted Birdbaths and Paper Cranes!!! Congrats. Email me your address and I will get it out to you on the weekend. kimmery4(at)yahoo(dot)com.

I saw that challenge. I’m overchallenged right now, so my random reading will have to be truly in a “no, I don’t want to choose from a challenge list” moment. Making it a challenge kind of takes away the fun, maybe.

I did join the take a chance challenge. This one sounds more of what I was looking for. Ah well. No more for now!!

Glad you’ve joined the challenge…I haven’t read the book you picked, but Ward is supposed to be an amazing author so I’ll look forward to hearing your thoughts!
