The Sunday Salon: A Travelogue

The Sunday Salon.comFirst of all, I’m annoyed WordPress failed to auto publish my posts over the weekend. What is up with that? Anyone else have problems auto posting? This was supposed to post yesterday…

From what I can tell, I haven’t written a Sunday Salon post since June 21 — that’s absurd, right?

The biggest reason I’ve missed TSS is because of travel — July 3-5 I was at my cabin, July 10-12 I was in Minnesota for my birthday, and July 17-21 I was in Minnesota for two bachelorette parties, one bridal shower, and one wedding. Last weekend I was finally in Madison, but spent the whole weekend avoiding my computer. This weekend, I was at my cabin again. Next weekend I’m going back to Minnesota for another wedding.

birthday

Part of the group that went out for my birthday a few weeks ago. Second from the left is my sister Jenny, of "Sisterhood of the Summer Reviews" fame. I'm third from the right, in a purple tank top.

If you’re counting — as I have been — I spent about 27 hours in my car traveling during July, plus another 6 already in August. That’s a lot.

Luckily, I had some great audio books to listen to while I was driving. Over the three weekends, I finished four different books — The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell, Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven by Susan Jane Gilman, Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, and Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell.

I’m considering a dedicated Audio Book Week on my blog so I can post all the reviews together.  I might also solicit audio book reviews from other bloggers and do a couple of Bookworms Carnival-esque posts so it’s not just my reviews, and maybe some more general posts about audio books.

I haven’t thought about it much yet, but what do you guys think? Does Audio Book Week sound interesting to anyone?

As I never listen to audio books, I just read these reviews as if they were reviews of ordinary books so …
But the idea is probably good for anyone who is not as old-fashioned as me 😀

I have tried to schedule posts in advance for the first time ever this weekend, and quite surprisingly Blogger did not let me down.

It looks like you’ve been having fun. I use auto post all the time and it usually works well, but it didn’t one day last week. I thought maybe I did something wrong that day, but maybe I didn’t.

Definitely. I always bring audiobooks with me on the road. I listened to three hours of Stephen King’s “Lisey’s Story” yesterday while driving back from Morris yesterday. There’s just something great about then that passes the time.

I have never had any problems with scheduled posts, touch wood. But would’ve been miffed early in July if my pre-scheduled posts had not posted while I was travelling myself.

I have never listened to an audiobook. Not because I am oldfashioned, but can’t seem to get into it at all. I have considered it for longer journeys in bus or car, since I get sick when reading in a car or a bus. A week dedicated to the pros and cons of audiobook listening versus reading a book plus reviews of the audiobooks sounds like a super idea, I think 🙂

An audio week sounds great, I’ve finished a couple recently and I’m listening to Charles de Lint’s Onion Girl at the moment, it would be great to get some recommedations

I’ve had problems with auto-posting too, but I have no idea why. My research to fix this problem has given me a big total of zero solution!

I don’t do audiobooks but an audiobook week might be the right time to try it out! 🙂

I love Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven. I read the book, but I have heard that the audio book is really great. I sometimes have problems with scheduled post on wordpress. I haven’t been able to figure out why they don’t publish them.

I think an audio book week sounds like a great idea! It is always good to discover new books which work well to listen to, as so many don’t.

I’ve been listening to Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven, too. Audio Book Week sounds like a good idea.

You’ve been so busy I don’t know how you found the time to blog at all. Frustrating to have something not post when you had it all planned. I’ve never listened to a book on tape, but it seems every other person I talk to has. So I’d be willing to bet that there’s be a lot of interest in that. Even a regularly weekly feature would probably get lots of participants. I’d be left out but oh well.
I have always wondered if certain types of books or stories are better on audio than reading them for yourself. Perhaps that’s something someone might address if your idea gets off the ground. I’d definitely read whatever you wrote so I could learn more about audio books. I’m reluctant but not completely. 🙂

I say yay for audio book week. What cute picture of you and your gang 🙂

I think audio books deserve slightly different reviews than regular books. Lots of things are the same — does it have good plot, characters, etc, but there are other factors that make a good audio book for me. Is the narrator easy to listen to? Is it easy to follow where you are in the book? Does the book keep your attention even when you’re paying attention to other stuff (for me, driving or cleaning).

Just discovered your site so I’ll read anything you offer. Can you throw in a picture of the cabin…maybe you reading at the cabin?

I love the idea of an audio book week! I listen to audiobooks in the car – I get to fit more books into my life that way.
