I read this book recently too and while I was more often underwhelmed that fascinated, I did appreciate the inside-track, behind-the-scenes look at high profile restaurant life. My favorite parts of the book like one of the other commenters was when the author went to Italy to learn how to make certain authentic dishes. Overall, it was a pretty interesting and quick read.

Rebecca: Yeah, I did enjoy it despite some of my complaints. But in a book that covers so much ground, it's almost inevitable that there will be things someone doesn't like.

Kathy: Definitely! Buford spends a ton of time in the kitchen and does a good job showing the different personalities and problems at a restaurant.

Anna: I don't watch Food Network much (I don't have cable), so I wasn't totally familiar with Mario Batali. I looked him up online though and recognized his face. I think if you know anything about him, the restaurant parts would be even better to read.

J.S. Peyton: I can see why some people would enjoy the Italian parts more -- I think it really just depends on interest. I didn't think they were badly written or anything, I just didn't enjoy that part as much. I haven't read Kitchen Confidential yet, but I'll probably be looking for it soon. I love to read about cooking too!

Yeah, I would never want to work in a professional kitchen! This sounds interesting despite the faults.

My husband is fascinated with the kitchens in famous restaurants so I bet he'd like this one. Thanks for the review.

Great review! I watch a lot of Mario Batali on the Food Network, so I think those parts about the inner workings of his restaurant sound fascinating.

I read this a couple of years ago and loved it. It reminded me a lot of "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain. I don't know if you've read that or not, but if you're looking for big personalities in the kitchen, that book definitely has it! The parenthetical clauses didn't really bother me, and strangely enough, I think I liked the Italian part more than the New York part. Maybe that's because so much of what happens in "Kitchen Confidential" is set it New York and it was nice to see what goes on in kitchens in another country. Anyway, glad you liked this for the most part! I'm not a big cook, but I definitely love reading about it. :)
