Read-a-Thon: The Progress Post

Read-a-Thon: The Progress Post post image

Today is the Read-a-Thon! Woo! Yesterday I posted my book list and plans, read Jill’s newest song, and packed for Iowa, so I’m raring to go. My plan is to make this a sticky post with the most recent updates at the top. If I do any Mini-Challenges, they’ll be in a different post underneath this one.

Like I said yesterday, I’m couch-bound in Ames, Iowa, hanging out with my sister, Jenny, for this Read-a-Thon. Jenny has been on the blog before when we did a series of Sister’s Reviews awhile back. She’s awesome.

With that, let’s Read-a-Thon!

Update #9: The Next Day, 9:50 a.m. CST

I did the End of Event Meme, but wanted to do one more update on this post in the regular update format:

Total Pages Read: 376
Books Read: 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff, Food Fray by Lisa H. Weasel, and Strange Bedfellows by Howard Richler.

Total Time Reading: 315 minutes (about, I stopped tracking super late at night)
Total Time Blogging: 155 minutes

Kim Is… Happy with how the Read-a-Thon went, and excited to do it in April!
Jenny Is… Out picking up some supplies for our breakfast this morning. Yum.

Snacks Consumed: Nothing yet today.

Other Stuff: Read-a-Thon was awesome, I had such a good time. I think it was good to be in Iowa with my sister for this first time I tried actually reading, since I got a break when I deeply needed one, then got to come back to a fun little book. I’ll make some different book choices next time — things with more narrative momentum will help with the fatigue, I think. But overall, I’m glad I got the books I read finished. Yay Read-a-Thon!

Update #8: Hour 20, 3:15 a.m. CST

Finished 84 Charing Cross Road a few minutes ago and have finally hit the wall. Three books finished, which was my goal from the beginning. Have a super rest of the Read-a-Thon, anyone stopping by, and I’ll try to do a better recap tomorrow.

Update #7: Hour 18, 1:30 a.m. CST

Just a quick note to say I’m back from a night out in Ames, Iowa, and am settling in to read a bit of 84 Charing Cross Road before I head to bed. Jenny is still out, but my ankle was really starting to hurt and needed some ice. The shoes worked like a charm though; thank goodness!

Hope anyone still up reading and/or cheering is having a good time! I’ll do one last update before I head to bed, whenever that is!

Update #6: Hour 11, 5:00 p.m. CST

Total Pages Read: 308
Books Read: Just jumping into 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff. I finally finished Food Fray by Lisa H. Weasel about 3:00 p.m., and of course Strange Bedfellows by Howard Richler.

Total Time Reading: 275 minutes
Total Time Blogging: 135 minutes

Kim Is… Back on the couch, ankle propped, bag of frozen veggies on the sprained ankle.
Jenny Is… Working on the insulation presentation again. Oh wait, she quit that. Now she’s reading about “generic cities” again.

Snacks Consumed: Grapes and some crackers.

Other Stuff: Right around 3:00, Jenny and I decided to take a break from Read-a-Thon and Homework-a-Thon to go to Target and take a driving tour around part of Ames. There’s a big football game tonight, so there were lots of maroon and gold clad people around.

We had to go to Target to try and find some shoes, since none of mine fit over my sprained ankle and ankle brace (picture at right). We’re back home for a little bit, then going out with some of her friends tonight. I’m going to carry a couple books around in case there’s some spare reading time, then check back in tonight. Hope things are going well for everyone else!

Update #5: Middle of Hour 7, 1:30 p.m. CST

Total Pages Read: 246
Books Read: On page 150 of Food Fray by Lisa H. Weasel (only like 50 pages to go!). Completed books include Strange Bedfellows by Howard Richler.

Total Time Reading: 230 minutes, although this also includes getting distracted talking to Jenny time.
Total Time Blogging: 105 minutes

Kim Is… On the couch with a bag of frozen green beans on my ankle. I’m getting ready for lunch though!
Jenny Is… Doing some school reading on the “generic city.” I don’t know what that means. She’s also been getting lunch ready.

Snacks Consumed: Cookies, plus a lunch of crackers, summer sausage, cheese, carrots, and grapes. Mmmm, lunch.

Other Stuff: The reading/homeworking playlist Jenny and I have been listening to today includes Fleetwood Mac, Counting Crows, Styx, and a High School Musical mix. Eclectic. Sophisticated AND Dorky, or just dorky?

A major question we’re currently discussing: Do you think The Office should continue after Steve Carell leaves? If it should, who should replace him? We’re undecided.

Update #4: Hour 6, 12:00 p.m. CST

Total Pages Read: 200
Books Read: On page 104 of Food Fray by Lisa H. Weasel. Completed books include Strange Bedfellows by Howard Richler.

Total Time Reading: 175 minutes
Total Time Blogging: 85 minutes

Kim Is… Still on the couch, sprained ankle still propped up. I sense a theme going on here.
Jenny Is… Finished with part of the insulation presentation PowerPoint, now in the kitchen making some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies so she can avoid doing her homework reading. That’s not really in the spirit of the Read-a-Thon 🙂

Snacks Consumed: Dark chocolate. I’m waiting on the cookies, and then I suspect we’ll have some lunch.

Other Stuff: Food Fray remains interesting, although a bit of a challenge to read. Jenny and I keep getting distracted and hanging out instead of reading, but that’s ok with me. It’s a beautiful day outside. I love warm fall days. I’m gonna try and go cheer for awhile, then back to reading while we eat lunch.

And how about those cheerleaders? Pretty awesome. You all rock.

Update #3: In Hour 4, 10:30 a.m. CST

Total Pages Read: 153
Books Read: In the middle of Food Fray by Lisa H. Weasel, finished Strange Bedfellows by Howard Richler

Total Time Reading: 125 minutes
Total Time Blogging: 61 minutes

Kim Is… Out on the couch reading and drinking tea.
Jenny Is… On the computer, working on on a PowerPoint presentation about insulation. She’s also blasting Fleetwood Mac 🙂 “Talk about AWESOME!” – Jenny

Snacks Consumed: A banana, and blueberry muffins! When Jenny got up around 9 she made them for us, and they are delicious.

Other Stuff: Food Fray is much better, now that I’m out on the couch and not trying to read it bed. That was making me sleepy. I just finished a chapter on “Frankenfood” which is appropriately literary. Also, the author used the phrase “strange bedfellows” on the first page, which made me laugh since I just recently finished reading Strange Bedfellows.

Update #2: In Hour 2, 8:31 a.m. CST

Pages Read: 89
Books Read: 1 – Strange Bedfellows by Howard Richler

Total Time Reading: 60 minutes
Total Time Blogging: 31 minutes

Snacks Consumed: Still no food! Jenny is still asleep, so I’m hiding out in the bedroom trying not to wake her up. She let me sleep in her bed and she took the couch so that I’d be able to prop up my sprained ankle. Sweet, right?

Kim Is… Same as before – sitting in bed with the ankle propped up. I did get up to brush my teeth, that’s exciting, right?
Jenny Is… Still sleeping!

Other Stuff: I finished Strange Bedfellows, which I started yesterday. It might not have been the best Read-a-Thon book, since it’s mostly just a big book of words. Oh well!

Update #1: The Beginning, 7:00 a.m. CST

Pages Read: 0
Books Read: 0

Total Time Reading: 0 minutes
Total Time Blogging: 0 minutes

Snacks Consumed: Nothing yet, but there is a promise of muffins sometime this morning.

Kim Is… Sitting in bed, ankle propped up, ready to go.
Jenny Is… Sleeping on the couch.

Other Stuff: Read-a-Thon on!!

    (Non)traditional Buddhist readathon blessing:

Just as the books fill the shelves,
Pile together on the floor and stack up on the table
So may the joy of the readathon
Flow forth to brighten your day and lift your spirit.
Books already read, books in progress and books yet to be read.

By the power of every word on the page
    May your book be delightful,
    As scary as Lovecraft’s Cthulhu
Or as sweet as a box of See’s candy.

Let the power of the images evoked by words
Keep you stay awake long through the night
    May no obstacle impede
    Your day filled with books.

For all of those who are reading today
Who follow in the path of Dewey
May your day be filled with the four blessings
Of fabulous books, tasty snacks, comfy chairs and joy.

  • Care October 9, 2010, 9:22 am

JENNY!!!! Wake UP! You’re missing all the fun! (Kim, you’ll have to make sure she stays up to update us if YOU take a nap….)

  • Christy (A Good Stopping Point) October 9, 2010, 9:29 am

That’s funny about the “strange bedfellows” coincidence. I’m expecting to find coincidences and connections between my read-a-thon books, but it’s easier to spot them when reading in quick succession.

    Jealous of the blueberry muffins!

  • Buried In Print October 9, 2010, 11:50 am

MMmmm, dark chocolate should be in the list of Read-A-Thon essentials, I’d say. (Hopefully there’re no GMed-ingredients so it fits with your food reading!)

  • Belle October 9, 2010, 12:23 pm

Have a great time! Cheering for you on my end!

  • Erin October 9, 2010, 12:34 pm

    A limerick for inspiration:

I hope that your day’s going well,
That the books you are reading are swell.
    A day for just reading
    (and mild competing)
Will do us all good, I can tell!

    Have fun 🙂

  • lisa (the little reader) October 9, 2010, 12:40 pm
