BBAW 2012: Book Blogs I Appreciate

BBAW 2012: Book Blogs I Appreciate post image

This week is Book Blogger Appreciation Week, a truly awesome celebration of book bloggers and book blogging that comes around every September. I’m not sure how many post I’ll be putting up this week to participate, but expect at least a few this week. I’m especially excited for today’s blogging topic, which is appreciation:

Appreciation! There are no awards this year, but it can still be hard to navigate the huge universe of book blogging. Share with your readers some of the blogs you enjoy reading daily and why.

If I counted correctly, I’m currently subscribed to more than 200 book blogs, everything from personal blogs like this one to more industry and publishing specific blogs like NPR Books. I don’t get to read each of them every day, but I try to skim over posts during the week and comment if I can. Of those, there are quite a few that I make sure to read every post. Here are a few (in no particular order):

Book Pairing (Nikki) — Book Pairing is a relatively new blog, but it’s great. Nikki likes to pair books in her reviews, or pair books with recipes, events, or experiences, which is really fun to read.

Julz Reads (Julie) — Julie’s blog is another relatively new-to-me-blog, but I’m already hooked. I really loved the variety of books Julie reads and the way she mixes in personal and other fun posts.

The 3R’s Blog (Florinda) — Florinda is one of my favorite bloggers (and a super great roommate, if you ever need one). I love how smartly she writes about books and issues that come up for book bloggers; I can always count on her as a voice of reason when drama arises.

Regular Rumination (Lu) — I love Lu, so much. She writes so well about poetry, which I admire since I never know what to say when I read poems.

books i done read (Raych) — Raych reads totally different books than I do, but her reviews remain some of the funniest most insightfully snarky that I have ever read.

Quirky Bookworm (Jess) — I love the variety on Jess’ blog, both in the books she reads and in the way she writes about them. I admire the creativity she brings to her reviews.

Fizzy Thoughts (Jill) — If you have not read one of Jill’s bookish song parodies, you are missing out. Jill is one of the funniest bloggers I know.

133v (Vasilly) — I always get great nonfiction and graphic novel suggestions from Vasilly’s blog.

a home between pages (Rachel) — Rachel always has good nonfiction and current literary fiction recommendations. I think we have a similar sweet spot in fiction, and a love for political nonfiction.

Jenny’s Books (Jenny) — Jenny has been on a hiatus this summer, but now she is back! Yay! Jenny writes really fun, personality filled reviews that I love to read even when I don’t know anything about the books she is writing about.

The Picky Girl (Jenn) — Jenn writes really well about books, but I also really love her semi-regular feature on home improvement, Fridays at Home.

Necromancy Never Pays (Jeanne) — Jeanne uses so many quotes and examples in her reviews, they’re just rich with detail in a time when we’re always pressured to write shorter and shorter pieces. I love learning and thinking when I read her reviews.

Shelf Love (Teresa) — Teresa is another one of my favorite bloggers. I love getting to hang out with her when we end up in the same city for bookish events. Like Florinda, Teresa always writes intelligently and sensibly about book bloggy drama, and we have a very similar take on a lot of issues.

The Betty and Book Chronicles (Melissa) — I love the way that Melissa doesn’t hold back in the way she writes, whether it’s about books or kids or life or politics. She takes risks in her writing, and I admire that.

write meg! (Meg) — Meg’s photography is just gorgeous, and she writes lovely posts about life and what it’s like to be twentysomething that consistently resonate with me.

There are a few other bloggers I’d like to mention, but they’re included in a guest post I have going up at the BBAW site later in the week, so I’ll just point you to them then.

I know this is going to sound cheesy, but in addition to all of these bloggers, I also want to say how much I appreciate everyone who reads this blog. It’s such an honor that you take time to read what I write here, to answer my questions and give thoughts on the books I’ve been reading. So thank you so very much for that, and make sure to leave a comment on this post saying “Hello!” so I know who you are.

Mutual appreciation! Since I know and love so many of the ones you mention here, I must check out the ones I don’t know as well.

CONFLICT! I love BBAW because of all the wonderful blogs it introduces and brings to my reader, but ohmygoodness, I have just spent 10 good minutes perusing a few of my favorite blogger’s lists and now have 66 new posts in my reader. So much to be inspired by! So many reminders of the overhaul my site needs these days. Thanks for the round-up and happy BBAW.

Thanks so much for the kind words, Kim! Your blog is one I greatly enjoy and admire, and you’ve definitely inspired me to pick up more non-fiction over the past few years. (Right now I’m reading The Worst Hard Time and loving it.) Happy BBAW!

Appreciation right back at you, along with the “super-great roommate” recommendation :-)! I’m not going to get the chance to participate in BBAW as much as I’d like to this year, but you’ve included many of my own favorites in your list, so I’ll just refer people to this post. Happy BBAW, and thanks again!

So many great great bloggers listed here but also some new faces that I’m not familiar with. I love how large and diverse the book blogosphere is…but also how loving. Jealous of all you bloggers who have gotten to meet one another. Hopefully one day!

  • Jenny September 10, 2012, 8:00 pm

Thank you, lovely Kim! I love a lot of the bloggers you mention, and I’m adding the ones I don’t know to my feed reader. Also, you are wonderful! I get lots of really great nonfiction recommendations from you.

  • jenn aka the picky girl September 10, 2012, 8:39 pm

  • Kristen M. September 10, 2012, 9:27 pm

There are so many blogs here that I’ve never seen before. This is probably my favorite day of the year though … it feels like Christmas morning where the tree is Google Reader. 🙂 Have a great week, Kim!

  • Joanna September 11, 2012, 5:29 am

What a great list, I added several new blogs to my reader and I think it might explode soon. I this day of BBAW – love looking through all those favorites lists!

  • Susan Kushner Resnick September 11, 2012, 7:50 am

Hi back to you, from a regular reader. I’m also an author whose book is shipping this week. How do I get you and all the other wonderful bloggers you listed to consider reviewing You Saved Me, Too?

  • softdrink September 16, 2012, 6:47 pm

Good grief, look how behind I am! Thanks for the appreciation! And for all the awesome non-fiction reviews that you post that make me want to read more non-fic. 😀
