Time and Place // 7:20 a.m. at my desk

Drinking // Green tea (delicious, but perhaps not the caffeine content I need this morning)

Reading // I spent a lot of time this week reading creative nonfiction submissions for a regional literary magazine. When I wasn’t doing that, I flipped between a couple of books: Hidden America by Jeanne Marie Laskas and The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara. I will finish one of these books this week.

Watching and Listening // On Friday, the boyfriend, a friend and I randomly watched Broadway Idiot, a documentary about the making of a Broadway musical out of Green Day’s American Idiot album. Since watching, I’ve been listening to the original cast recording of American Idiot — their versions of “21 Guns” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends” are gorgeous.

Building // While I was at home this weekend, my mom and I made a trip to Target where we could my birthday present — a little patio table and chairs for our backyard. I starting putting them together last night, but I have some work for later today.

Blogging // This week on the blog I posted a brief review of The Map Thief by Michael Blanding, interrogated my bookshelves, and shared some of my favorite memoirs.

Enjoying // This list of 24 Things We Unexpectedly Became Obsessed With In our Late 20s made me laugh.

Reflecting // The boyfriend and I made a quick trip to the Twin Cities this weekend for a memorial service for my uncle, who passed away unexpectedly in April. I’ve been thinking about him, and the rest of my family, a lot in the last week. I remember what a warm and generous sense of humor he had, and I was so glad to meet and talk with other people who loved that about him.

Loving // One of our quick stops this weekend was to a new grocery store in Richfield that my sister helped to design. It was so cool to walk through a building and hear from her about some of the touches she helped with.

Anticipating // We leave for Fourth of July up at the cabin this Thursday afternoon. I’m in the middle of packing, cleaning, baking, and (most importantly) choosing the books I’m going to take with me. Long weekends at the lake are my happy place.

Very sorry about your uncle; it’s so difficult to lose people.

I remember seeing previews for the American idiot inspired musical and wishing I could go watch it.

I didn’t remember the musical, at all, but I’m loving the musical adaptations of the album.

How interesting about the literary magazine. Are you on the staff now? I just discovered a creative nonfiction podcast (It’s not current – it from 2006, but episodes are still available for listening) and I’ll be listening to a few today in an effort to start planning my curriculum – I just got a job teaching creative nonfiction at my old high school!

    • Kim July 1, 2014, 6:06 pm

No, I’m not on staff for the magazine — I’m just one of the readers for one section. I, along with two other people, get to go through all the submissions and give thoughts on whether they should be included.

How cool that your sister helped design that grocery store! Julie and I tried to get tickets to American Idiot a couple of years ago and never could.

So many good things, Kim! The getaway for the 4th of July sounds the bestest!

I’d love to see the A.I. musical. I listened to that CD until it broke I think. And uh! I want to run away to a cabin this weekend! That sounds so wonderful. Or maybe the beach. Just somewhere. But alas, we will be here. We may go to a friend’s party, and I know my daughter has her sights set on a Walking Dead marathon.

I’ve been looking forward to this long weekend away since I got back from BEA. After the month I’ve had in June, it can’t come soon enough!

That list of 24 things is really hilarious! Yep – many of them apply to me too!

  • Jeanne July 1, 2014, 7:38 am

I am looking forward to your birthday! A patio table and chairs sounds like a great present to me.

  • Leah @ Books Speak Volumes July 1, 2014, 7:56 am

I’m sorry to hear about your uncle, but your Fourth of July trip sounds lovely!

  • Jenny @ Reading the End July 1, 2014, 10:09 am

Really sorry about your uncle, but I’m glad y’all got to have a memorial service. It sounds lovely.

That Thought Catalog list made me laugh too, although possibly for different reasons? All the things on it that were about being more of a square than in your youth were never not true of me. I ALWAYS went to bed before midnight (nearly always). I ALWAYS bragged about having productive weekends. I love being this age because everyone has finally stopped judging me for liking sleep so much. :p

    • Kim July 1, 2014, 6:08 pm

I was pretty square as a kid too — no drinking, no partying, mostly just being a nerd and reading a ton. The one about productive weekends made me laugh because I now think that ALL the time.

  • Holly July 1, 2014, 10:17 am

That list is amazing! “Zack Morris was a goddamn tyrant.” Yes.

  • Tabitha (Not Yet Read) July 1, 2014, 10:49 am

I totally need to check out that 24 Things post.

Right now: still laying in bed after having been up since 2:40 am working call shift…sleep evades me, I give up now.

  • Sheila (Book Journey) July 1, 2014, 11:31 am

First… love the geek button. 🙂 How fun that your sister helped to design a store!

    • Kim July 1, 2014, 6:11 pm

I was so proud of her! She’s quick to point out that she just helped, but I’m still allowed to brag about it 🙂

  • Monika @ Lovely Bookshelf July 1, 2014, 2:39 pm

Wait… what?! There’s a musical based on Green Day’s music?!

I hope you’re enjoying People in the Trees. That was one I really wanted to love, but it didn’t work for me. I had to enjoy it vicariously through reviews. 😉

  • Jennifer July 13, 2014, 8:18 pm

My condolences for the loss of your uncle.
