currently july 20 2014

Briefly // The boyfriend and I are moving! We signed a lease on a new rental house last weekend and are gearing up to move into the new place on August 2. It’s quick, trust me, I know. I’m not sure what that is going to mean for the blog over the next month or so, but I’m hoping it won’t be too disruptive.

Time and Place // 8:25 a.m. on my sister’s couch in the Twin Cities.

Eating and Drinking // Fage Greek yogurt and water

Reading // This week I finished three books, Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay, Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin, and Rat Queens, Vol. 1: Sass and Sorcery by Kurtis Wiebe and Roc Upchurch. I’m still thinking about Bad Feminist, but honestly, I’m not sure if I loved it or not. Rat Queens is part of my foray into comic books thanks to ComiXology and the inspiration of Book Rioters Rebecca Schinsky and Amanda Nelson.

Watching // My sister and I finished watching Merlin together last night. The boyfriend and I rented 21 Jump Street on Friday (funny and dumb) and a friend and I went to see X-Men: Days of Future Past on Tuesday. It was a busy week of watching!

Listening // I’m still making my way through Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand on audio. It’s amazing so far. Hillenbrand knows how to tell a story, and Louie Zamperini has an amazing story to tell.

Buying // Since we’re moving, I’m trying not to impulse buy any new books. But I did have a book on pre-order that arrived this week, Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley. This is a graphic novel about a young chef who discovers a way to have second chances on her life thanks to a magic mushroom. It sounds super fun. Also, the book for the Riot Read, a monthly book club from Book Riot, arrived — Landline by Rainbow Rowell. I want to start that one soon.

Blogging // This week I shared thoughts on two trilogies that I loved and some nonfiction recommendations on bananas and presidents.

Promoting // This tutorial on how to create bright and sharp phone photos from Elsie Larson at A Beautiful Mess was really helpful, since most of the photos I take casually are photos from my cellphone.

Hating // The prairie can get windy! Earlier this week I came home to see my container garden totally tipped over. The poor tomatoes.

Loving // We got a new Keurig for the office. I don’t drink coffee, but it’s fun to use to make tea and other specialty drinks. I had a lot of chai tea this week.

Wanting //I got it in my head that I really want to get a library book cart for my office at the new house. I think it’d be so fun to store review copies and whatnot on so I could keep track of them better.

Anticipating // I’m tentatively planning an unofficial “Nonfiction August” to start digging into the pile of books I brought home from Book Expo America that publish in September. I also haven’t read any seriously amazing, mind-bending nonfiction in what feels like months — a nonfiction binge should help change that, right?

Congrats and good luck on the move! Did you know that chai is the Hindi word for tea? So saying chai tea is like saying tea tea- it is more correct to just say chai. Or tea.

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:48 pm

I did not know that, thank you for the clarification!

  • Bryan G. Robinson July 20, 2014, 9:26 am

First, congratulations to you and the boyfriend on the move. Second, what did you think of X-Men: Days of Future Passed? Oh…and Unbroken? One of my favorites when I read it last year…I think it was last year. Well, whenever it was, it was one of my favorites.

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:49 pm

I liked the X-Men movie quite a bit. I thought it was fun — not life-altering or anything, but a good summer movie.

  • bermudaonion (Kathy) July 20, 2014, 9:57 am

Good luck with the move! I don’t drink coffee but love some of the Keurig teas and their lemonade.

  • Sandy July 20, 2014, 10:34 am

Moving is a pain in the butt, but also exciting! I just went to see 22 Jump Street at the movie with a friend, and it was also funny and dumb. But exactly what I like to see sometimes. I read Unbroken (on audio) a couple of years ago, and my daughter is reading it now for her summer reading. Such an amazing story, and I can’t wait to see the movie.

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:50 pm

Moving is both of those things — I’m trying to focus on the exciting part rather than the ugh, we have to box up all our junk, part.

  • Vasilly July 20, 2014, 11:33 am

Now I’m thinking about a library book cart! That would really help me keep the space on my bookshelves for books I bought instead of those sent by publishers.

I may “join” you on your nonfiction August. I have a ton on nonfiction books that I would really like to get to within the next few weeks. Your reaction of Bad Feminist makes me really curious about it. Can’t wait to read your thoughts.

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:51 pm

I can’t stop thinking about how awesome a book cart would be, especially for review copies or those “books to read next” sorts of reads. Plus it’d look cool. I’m waiting to get one until after we move and I see what my office space is going to look like.

  • Diane@BibliophilebytheSea July 20, 2014, 4:20 pm

Good luck with the move Kim.

  • Anita July 20, 2014, 8:16 pm

Three books, yay for you. My July reading has not been stellar in pace. I think I’ll pick up,audio of Unbroken.
    August non fiction sounds good…enjoy.
I hate the idea of moving…could I blink and it would be done? I doubt it.

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:51 pm

The audio of Unbroken is read by Edward Hermann, the grandfather from Gilmore Girls — that is making me love it even more.

  • Jeanne July 21, 2014, 7:02 am

I went along with a younger person who wanted to see 22 Jump Street, and was surprised to find that it was more funny and less dumb than the first. There are continuous jokes about sequels which build to an end-of-the-fireworks-display climax at the beginning of the credits.

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:52 pm

That sounds fun! Despite it being sort of dumb, I did like 21 Jump Street. We’ll look for the second on when it’s on video, I bet.

Looking for a library cart? Demco or Gaylord are the US go tos. Type library supplies into a search engine….or go get a kitchen one, you might find it cheaper

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:52 pm

Yeah… library carts were not cheap. I’ll do some digging once I decide if I actually will use one. Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Meg July 21, 2014, 8:37 am

I’m pretty much in love with Keurig and had a mini-meltdown when it malfunctioned while Spencer was away on business . . . I mean, I was home alone without coffee, which is pretty much a recipe for disaster!

Best wishes with your move — phew, I’m glad to be on this side of it, honestly, and will send you good vibes!

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:53 pm

Thank you — we’ll take all the good vibes we can get!

  • Athira July 21, 2014, 5:11 pm

Good luck with your move! Hope it goes smoothly! A book cart is such a fabulous thing to have! I worry I may just find more reason to buy more books, but it will be cool!

    • Kim July 21, 2014, 8:53 pm

Yeah… that’s sort of what I think would happen. But whatever, I love my books 🙂

  • Jenny @ Reading the End July 22, 2014, 12:39 pm

Good luck with the move! They can be so stressful, but hopefully y’all will make it through with a minimum of anxiety.

  • Leah @ Books Speak Volumes July 23, 2014, 1:14 pm

Good luck with the move! I hope it goes smoothly!

As for fantastic non-fiction, I just finished In the Kingdom of Ice by Hampton Sides, which I picked up at BEA. I don’t read a ton of non-fiction, but this book reminded me how fascinating and gripping it can be.

    • Kim July 27, 2014, 6:30 pm

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll have to look for that one.

  • Katie @ Doing Dewey July 25, 2014, 8:37 pm

Haha, well, I was going to say good luck with the move, but it appears to have been said! Nevertheless, I hope it goes well 🙂

  • Care July 29, 2014, 5:04 pm

I’m moving, too! Let’s NOT get lost to each other even if we know virtual addresses – I love snail mail.

  • Jennifer July 30, 2014, 1:00 pm

Good luck with the move! I both love and hating movie. It’s definitely an exciting process and there are so many cool possibilities of transforming a new space into something exciting and functional and beautiful. But it’s a lot of work!

Also, I love the idea of a nonfiction August! You always have awesome book-related ideas!

  • Lu August 7, 2014, 12:36 pm

I love that link on phone photos! Very useful. It’s also such a cute idea to have a library cart in your house!
