Hooray, day off from work in the middle of the week!
Thanksgiving has turned into kind of a hit-or-miss holiday for me. I don’t get the day after Thanksgiving off as an official work holiday, and since we are a Saturday newspaper work needs to get done Friday so the paper gets printed and delivered on time.
This year I decided not to take Friday off, so it’ll be a bit of a split Thanksgiving celebration. We’re going over to a friend’s house for dinner today, then heading to the Twin Cities on Friday night to do Thanksgiving II with my family on Saturday. Then, a dear friend is getting ordained on Sunday afternoon, so we’re sticking around for that before heading back home. It should be a full, festive weekend… once I get done working!
But, I’m not thinking about that now. Today is a vacation meant for reading, food, friends and football. We’re not heading out for Thanksgiving dinner until about 3 p.m., so I’ve got all morning for books (and a short list of chores I’m hoping to get done before we’re out of town for the weekend). Here’s what’s on my list for the weekend:
- Re Jane by Patricia Park –– I’ve been in the middle of this book forever. I’m not sure what’s taking so long, but I am determined to finish it today. I’m enjoying it a lot so far, so I doubt that will be a chore.
- The Dead Duke, His Secret Wife and the Missing Corpse by Piu Marie Eatwell — I swear, I’m going to stop buying new books soon. I ordered this one a few days ago and I’m kind of excited to hop in — that title is impossible to resist.
- Get In Trouble by Kelly Link — The boyfriend and I needed some short stories on audio book for our drive, and this one came recommended when I asked for collections that were weird or a little dark.

I hope you enjoy it! We ended up catching up on podcasts for the drive in on Friday, but I’m hoping we can do audio for the drive back.
My workplace doesn’t close on the day after Thanksgiving either, but I’m taking the day off. Hoping to finish reading two books, start a new one, and write about several over the long weekend. Happy Thanksgiving, Kim!

I don’t think you’ve ever discussed your boyfriend’s reading interests or habits. I’m curious as to how the dynamics work with your relationship. Where do his tastes run? Does he ever pick the audiobook for your drives or is it a joint decision? What do you think of his choices and vice versa? What does he do while you’re catching up on your reading? Does he like your recommendations in general?
Good questions! Nate’s a reader, but not nearly as voraciously as me, and he’s less likely to stick with a book to finish it if he’s not interested. That said, he likes what I’d consider more complicated stuff than I do — Borges is his favorite author, but I’ve had trouble getting into him. We tend to intersect on books that straddle the literary/genre fiction line (we both loved Ready Player One, for example), and on science/social science/psychology nonfiction. I tend to pick our audio books, just because I’m more connected to what’s new and interesting. I think he’d say I do a pretty good job on that front? He loves to watch movies, especially scary movies and foreign thrillers, so he often does that when I’m reading.

Happy Thanksgiving! It’s not one of my favorite holidays, because I love Christmas so much and get antsy for it by late November. But it’s still super fun to see the family and catch up on all their doings and such.
Good reading. But now I’m hitting myself upside the head … I’m always looking for audiobooks for driving trips with Mr. BFR, but we almost never listen because we are always gabbing. SHORT STORIES! Duh. Of course. Obvious. We could likely squeeze in one short piece at least.
The drive to and from the Twin CIties is only about 7 hours total, so we have a hard time finishing novels or longer audio books. Short stories or essays have worked, since you can just listen to what you get to and jump back in later without forgetting what is happening. Podcasts tend to be good for that too.

Yeah, I know how that goes. I try really, really hard not to work from home on days off, but I am often tempted to check my email… just to see what’s going on. Never a good idea!
The Dead Duke is definitely one I have been eyeballing after seeing it around on Nonfiction November. I mean, with a title like that, how can you ignore it?
