The Gobbledybooks: Everything I Want to Read Right Now

I have a wicked case of the gobbledybooks.

Andi (Estella’s Revenge) and Heather (Capricious Reader) came up with delightful phrase to to describe the phenomenon when you want to read all of the books and so read none at all. Whomp whomp.

Since my marathon read of Spinster by Kate Bolick over the weekend, my reading has been pulled in all sorts of different directions. I’ve also been running around a lot this week, so my brain feels like it’s having a hard time settling down. It’s especially hard when there is so much good tv on right now — the finales of The Magicians and iZombie were so great! Oh, and I finally got an epic post done for Book Riot — I can’t wait to share this one.

Anyway, when my brain gets this scattered I like to make a list… hence, this post: all of the books I wish I could be reading right now.

  1. The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee — This one is going to be due back at the library soon and I really want to get it done so I don’t have to try and take out another hold.
  2. The Regional Office is Under Attack by Manuel Gonzales — My pre-order of this exciting book arrived on Tuesday and I want to crack it open really bad!
  3. Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter — HAMILTOME! I actually cracked this beauty open when it arrived on Tuesday and stayed up well past my bedtime skimming through the first half… it’s a delight.
  4. Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee — Our library has started a book club and I’m trying my best to be a good participant. This is the next read, which I am trying to have done by next Wednesday.
  5. The Run of His Life: The People v. O. J. Simpson by Jeffry Toobin — I didn’t watch the recent FX series about the O.J. Simpson trial, but seeing previews and reading reviews made me super curious to revisit that case. This highly recommended book was a total impulse buy.
  6. Walking Portland by Becky Ohlsen — We’re taking a trip to Portland later this summer for my cousin’s wedding, planning to turn it into a long-ish weekend to explore the city. I found this walking guide to the city online and got super excited about it!

Ugh, man. It’s already 8:40 p.m. as I’m drafting this post on Wednesday night. I have to get ready for bed and finish my chores and then, maybe, I will try to get my brain into a book. So many books, so little time… Happy Thursday!

I love this term! And I’d also love to be reading The Expatriates and Regional Office! And – if you’ve never watched the 30 for 30 doc on the day of the OJ car chase, it’s fantastic. It’s about all the major sports events that were going on on that day in June (NBA finals, Stanley Cup, some major golf tourney)….and how nobody was paying attention to any of them b/c they were watching the car chase. And how TV networks kept breaking into coverage of the major events w/ car chase coverage.

I didn’t know there was a 30 for 30 on that day! I haven’t watch any of those documentaries, but I’ve heard lots of good things about them.

I know what you mean about wanting to read all the books, but I cannot say that has ever prevented me from reading. I am usually pretty good about ignoring pretty new books and focusing on the one at hand. I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing though, as it is also the reason why I DNF so few books.

I hope you find one with which you can settle and into which you can immerse yourself!

I think sometimes when I have lots of books I want to read I avoid making a decision about which one to pick up by doing something totally different… usually watching tv!

I hope things settle down so you can get some reading done! I know how hard it is to focus on books when your mind is buzzing with other things. This is a wonderful list! In dying for my holds on Regional Office and Hamiltome to come in at the library.

    • Kim April 17, 2016, 11:05 am

The Hamiltome is so beautiful! I’m having a hard time not just flying through it.

I’ve heard wildly opposite opinions about The Regional Office is Under Attack. I’m very interested to hear your opinion when you’re done.

I know this feeling so well. Sometimes it’s crippling enough to make me not read anything at all!

I was wondering where that term was coming from!! I feel like I’m like that ALL THE TIME! I have a huge stack of books beside my bed, and feel like I’m always lusting after them and only finishing a book every week or two these days, so nothing is moving. Wonder how long this gobbledybooks feeling lasts?
    How did you like Spinster?!

    • Kim April 17, 2016, 11:04 am

I liked Spinster a lot, although I think it’s a pretty limited view of single life focused on a particular type of woman.

  • iliana April 16, 2016, 2:39 pm

That is a perfect term! I have five books going on right now (including The Expatriates) and I want to add more! Hope you are enjoying your weekend and hopefully you are getting in some serious quality reading time 🙂

    • Kim April 17, 2016, 11:03 am

I got in a nice long morning of reading Saturday, so great.

  • Jenny @ Reading the End April 17, 2016, 3:21 pm

HAMILTOME! I got it for my mum for her birthday, so I’ve been reading it every time I swing by her place. I’m only a few chapters in, and he’s already referenced Harry Potter twice and told a story about Hugh Laurie inspiring one of the show’s songs, so — it’s everything I wanted and more.

    • Kim April 24, 2016, 8:26 am

I texted my sister after the second Harry Potter reference. Such a nerd!

  • Lisa April 17, 2016, 4:48 pm

The Regional Office is one that I’m really interested in; hearing so many great things about it. It’s hard not to have the gobbledybooks when you know there are so many interesting books begging to be read!!

  • Unruly Reader April 22, 2016, 11:17 pm

Jeffery Toobin’s book “The Nine,” about the Supreme Court, was completely tantalizing. Great writer.

    • Kim April 24, 2016, 8:26 am

I have that one on my shelves too. Now that I just finished Notorious RGB during the Readathon, I want to read that one too!
