Book Expo America 2016: A Quick Look at the Books

I was sure I’d be able to get a post up today with some of my highlights from the trip. But then I had to dig myself out of what felt like an incredibly deep email hole at work and cover a school board meeting that lasted until after 8:30 p.m. Suffice it to say, by the time I got home and put on my pajamas, I had no brain power left to put together the post I was planning. Instead, here are a bunch of gratuitous photos of the books I picked up at Book Expo America this year!

First, what I managed to snag on Wednesday afternoon — a mix of galley giveaways and author signings:

The highlights of that pile are probably Truevine by Beth Macy (October, Little Brown), Another Day in the Death of America by Gary Younge (October, Nation Books), and You’ll Grow Out of It by Jessi Klein (July, Grand Central Publishing).

Next, the books from Thursday:

As you can probably tell, one of my stops that day was Graywolf Press, where I was able to pick up two of their fall nonfiction titles — Riverine by Angela Palm (August) and The Art of Waiting by Belle Boggs (September). I also was able to snag a galley of Shirley Jackson by Ruth Franklin (September, Liveright), a much-coveted biography on the show floor. More on these books later.

Finally, my smaller book haul from Friday:

Friday felt a bit more random, in terms of what I ended up bringing home. I was looking for Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi (June, Knopf) and The Virginity of Famous Men by Christine Sneed (September, Bloomsbury), but managed to pick up several more promising titles too.

I’ll have more on all the books — and all the fun moments — from the conference in the next few weeks, once work settles down and I can get back into a groove.

I’ve got to get my hands on Truevine – I loved Macy’s book Factory Man.

They were giving away a ton of galleys of Truvine at the show — I think they’re hoping it’ll be a big title this year.

I’m curious to hear more about Ruth Franklin’s “SHIRLEY JACKSON.”
    Thank you.

You’re lucky I’m all about gratuitous photos of books!

I like your stacks from BEA. You picked quite a lot of different books than I did at BEA which is good. I’m envious that you got Emma Donoghue’s upcoming book The Wonder and the Shirley Jackson biography. I missed both of those and would have loved to get them! See my stack over at http://www.thecuecard.com. Cheers.

That’s one of the things I love about seeing the after BEA posts — even when you feel like you know what’s there, there are always a ton of surprises and things you missed.

I am salivating over the stacks of books that you brought home! You wouldn’t hear from me for weeks if I had all those books to read.

    • Kim May 18, 2016, 8:55 pm

I’m having a lot of trouble focusing at work this week because I definitely want to be at home with the books 🙂

The new Shirley Jackson biography! So exciting! I can’t wait to hear what people think of that biography — a bunch of bloggers have told me how much they’re looking forward to it. I am going to let y’all tell me what’s in it before I commit. I have a suspicion that Shirley Jackson’s life was horribly sad.

People at BEA were really excited about it — the editor I talked with at the WW Norton booth said they didn’t bring enough copies to give away. I hope it’s good (if probably sad).

It’s interesting how you came home with (almost) completely different favorite books than I did. Good to know the bounty at BEA was enough for all.

I’ve made a little “books at BEA” post (mostly pictures), too. Maybe I’ll post it Sunday.

I’m jealous of Homegoing and Shirley Jackson; I missed both of those due to my complete lack of preparedness going in. BEA being scheduled during final exam week through me for a loop.

Homegoing was at the top of my list, and I got lucky on the Shirley Jackson biography — I totally missed when they did the official galley drop.

Lots of good looking books there. I look forward to hearing more about them!

You got some great stuff! I loaned my dad my copy of The Dig since I didn’t have time to get to it yet and he really enjoyed it a lot.

  • Jennine G May 22, 2016, 6:55 pm

Oh, I just love seeing the stacks of titles to go look into and consider! Glad you had such luck finding great stuff.

I would love to experience BEA. I’ve got “You’ll Grow Out of it” coming up.
