This sounds like a lovely book, but I think way too sad for me. I’ve just finished watching The Scariest and Saddest Ever Science Fiction Miniseries ™ so I need cheerful fare for a while!

Your review is fantastic and has made me anxious to read this book. I can’t think of the last book that I read at the perfect time like that, but it has happened to me quite a few times.

The pregnancy question makes me really nervous. I keep thinking about the way Katniss woke up at the end of the 74th Hunger Games with her stylists around her talking about surprising her with a breast augmentation. To me, it really drove home the point that her body is no longer hers. While I don’t believe that Katniss would ever have sex with Peeta or Gale, I wouldn’t put it past the medical ethics of either Panem or the rebels to artificially inseminate Katniss while she is unconscious. And I find that utterly frightening.

Blogging is about freedom-the freedom to express your thoughts-if you have a hidden motive-so be it-I do not see any committee of book bloggers as qualified to formulate a code of ethics-as to the FTC issue-of course that only effects USA book bloggers not Asian based bloggers like myself-if you read a blog and you feel the bloggers is somehow not acting in accord with your notion of ethics just ignore him-

Gwen: There’s a lot that hideous about this study, and for those reasons I can’t imagine it would ever be able to be done today. But at the same time, it’s taught us so much about starvation and, more importantly, about how to help people recover from starvation. That research is invaluable, but what kind of cost did that knowledge come from? There aren’t easy answers to that question, but it’s good to think about.

nat: Thanks, I’ve been working on a review format for a long time. I like having to condense my thoughts into a couple of sentences — it’s a good exercise in focus.

I didn’t know there had been so many hunger studies either. Some of them are pretty hard to read about, but I’m glad I did.

Nymeth: No problem, I was excited to read it after Eva and, I think, Rebecca too, mentioned liking it. It was a good companion to the other much more specific book I read on hunger.
