Narrative Journalism, For the Win

I love when journalist try experiments when telling narrative stories. “A Facebook story: A mother’s joy and a family’s sorrow” from the Washington Post is a story told almost entirely using Facebook status updates. It’s just amazing.

My Writings on the Interwebs

I recently finished a story for work about the redesign of the Perkins Brailler, a product that hadn’t been redesigned since 1951. I think this article turned out well.

I also did a freelance piece of Readers’ Advisor News about Book Blog Basics for Librarians. A big thanks to Sarah at Citizen Reader for helping me set up this story, and Jenn at Jenn’s Bookshelves for being interviewed.

The Sunday Salon: A Catch Up Post

by Kim on August 8, 2010 · 37 comments

I haven’t done The Sunday Salon in a long time, and I’ve found myself really missing it. I liked having a space and excuse to do just have a sort of personal musings and readings post, so I’m going to try and start up again.

Right now seems like a good time for a general reading and life update, if you’re interested in this dork’s life, with pictures!

Monday Tally is a day early this week because tomorrow is my discussion for Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried. I can’t wait!

Post image for Monday Tally: E-Readers and Book Bloggers

A long time ago I used to do a weekly link round-up called Monday Tally. I’m going to try to start that up again, using it as a space to highlight some of the best links I’ve read over the past week.

This week: e-readers, book bloggers, and some great books for my TBR list.

Over the last few weeks I got to work on a freelance story for our local newspaper about summer reading trends and approaches. I interviewed local librarians and other readers to try and write about why people choose the books they choose in the summer, and about the idea of taking on summer reading projects versus “beach reads.”

I’d love it if you went over and read the article and let me know what you think. There’s also a sidebar of suggested summer reads in a variety of categories that I think turned out well too. And there’s a story on e-readers (by another editor), that I think is good too.

Other Writings on the Interwebs

by Kim on May 3, 2010 · 8 comments

This semester I’ve been working with two other students and a professor to put together Corkboard, an online journal of literary journalism. Our first issue went live today and I would love it if you headed over to take a look.

I have three sorts of things I want to write about for Sunday Salon today, so I broke them into clever alliterative headings. “Books” is about my reading life this week, “Blogging” is about some minor changes to Sophisticated Dorkiness, and “My Broadcasting” is about some writing I had published around the web this week. [...]

This week author Michal Pollan was in Madison for a huge series of events because his book In Defense of Food was picked for UW-Madison’s first ever common reading program, Go Big Read. It feels like the whole campus has been buzzing because of his visit. Or, it just feels like the whole campus because [...]

Blogging over at Eat. Drink. Better.

by Kim on September 25, 2009 · 6 comments

One of my assignment for my magazine writing class this semester is to blog regularly over at Eat. Drink. Better., a member of Green Options Media that “invites readers to explore the environmental issues surrounding their food choices.” I’ll be blogging about healthy eating and nutrition specifically, with a side emphasis on books since that’s [...]
