The Sunday Salon: Life by the Numbers

The Sunday Salon.com Thank you for hanging in there with me while blogging takes a back seat to  major life changes. I don’t like putting the blog on hiatus, but I just can’t seem to find the inspiration to puts words together, and I’d rather not post than post things that aren’t good.

It seems like everything in life has become a numbers game… how many days until X, how much will Y cost, how far until we get to Z? In that sense, here’s some of what my life has been like lately:

2: Full days I have left until we begin The Big Move.
18 and counting: Boxes it took to pack all my books.

11: Books read in July.
3,696: Pages read in July.
8: Books I still have unreviewed.

72: Episodes of “Prison Break” I’ve watched since July 15 instead of reading/packing/sleeping. Wentworth Miller is dreamy.

8 and counting: AT&T “customer service” agents my roommate and I have interacted with trying to simply change the account holder name on our bill. This has still not been accomplished.
$150: Dollars my gym charged me to cancel my contract early, even though I’m cancelling because I’m moving out of the state. I’m still pissed off about this.

71: Pages read in Game of Thrones, which I’m starting to like more and more as I read.
86: Pages read in Domestic Violets, which is, so far, just as awesome as everyone has been saying it was. It’s really, really funny.

33: Awards categories for Book Blogger Appreciation Week. Head on over and register/nominate for favorite blogs for this really awesome event.
6: $0.99 ebooks I purchased from my local independent bookstore as part of Harper Perennial’s big summer book promotion. Check it out!

2.5: Hours left until my last time with out wine-tasting group, WASTED. I have a lot of stuff to get ready before then, so I’ll have to cut this off here. Happy Sunday, everyone, and I hope we’ll be able to get back to regularly scheduled programming soon.

hm, I don’t think the Harper Perennial sale is available in Canada. 🙁 At least not on the website I checked.

I have an ARC of Domestic Violets. I am just waiting for my new computer so I can get things off NetGalley easily. 🙂

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:38 am

Oh bummer! I think they’re one sale at major book websites (B&N, Amazon) if that helps?

Domestic Violets is so funny so far. I really hope it continues to be as awesome.

  • Trisha August 7, 2011, 10:20 am

    Wentworth Miller…aaahhhh yummy….

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:39 am

Why has he not done more things so I can watch him all the time? DREAMY.

  • bermudaonion (Kathy) August 7, 2011, 10:52 am

What an exciting time for you!

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:39 am

It is! Exciting and scary 🙂

  • christa @ mental foodie August 7, 2011, 11:05 am

I like Prison Break! (Though Season 1 is still the best I think). Don’t forget there’s a Prison Break movie too – watch it AFTER you have finished the series. Good luck with the move!

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:40 am

Yes, S1 is still my favorite. S3 jumps off the bandwagon a little bit, and with no Michael/Sara, I was just adrift. But S4 is picking back up again.

  • Helen Murdoch August 7, 2011, 11:31 am

Great way to do a post! The phone company and gym? Total pain in the you-know-what! Cancellation fees are such a scam. I love that you’re addicted to Prison Break. This summer my addiction is Ugly Betty; I am almost done with season 3

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:40 am

I never realized how much companies will try to get you if you have to cancel contracts. It’s really aggravating.

  • Suey August 7, 2011, 11:36 am

You’re doing a Prison Break marathon? We can’t get enough of it here and have been doing it all over again this summer too! LOVE Wentworth Miller! Why don’t we see him more things? Did you know he’s literature major from some Ivy League college (I forget which one.) Yep, it makes him all the more cool, don’t you think? 🙂

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:42 am

A literature major? That makes him even more dreamy! I wish he did more acting, for sure.

  • Megan August 7, 2011, 12:06 pm

What a scam about the gym! It’s not like you were thinking “Heh, heh heh. I’ll move out of state just to welch on my contract. Muah!”

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:42 am

Exactly! I get that they don’t want people to just cancel willy-nilly, but come on!

  • Melissa August 7, 2011, 2:04 pm

Oh, you know I can absolutely relate to this particular numbers game. I am in awe and more than impressed with the number (ha!) of books you’ve read this month, with all that you have going on. I tip my hat to you … and it will all come together soon, you’ll see.

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:43 am

I read a lot of them on my 4th of July vacation and a long road trip we had to take around the middle of the month. I didn’t get much reading done while I was at home.

  • Diane@BibliophileBytheSea August 7, 2011, 4:39 pm

You certainly have a lot on your plate; how all goes smoothly moving forward.

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:44 am

Thanks — I hope the move tomorrow goes smoothly.

  • Colleen August 8, 2011, 8:35 am

Congratulations on the new job – it sounds like a great opportunity! Hang in there with all the changes – I know it is stressful.

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:44 am

The new job is a huge opportunity, I’m so excited about it. Not so much about the moving and leaving Madison, but change happens.

  • Amy August 8, 2011, 10:16 am

I’m late to say, Congratulations on your new job! It sounds like a fantastic opportunity! You can always move back to Madison, it’ll be there! It’s just great to hear news like your when the country is a mess and people are losing jobs or geting cut down to part-time. You went to grad school for a reason and the reason is coming true! Yay!

Moving and all that is stressful, but you’ll get through it and your readers will be here to support you not to mention all those other great people in your life.

I love Prison Break and have ben watching it again on Netflix!
    Domestic Violets is soo funny!

    Have a great week!

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:45 am

Thanks Amy! That’s part of the reason I took the job — it’s so hard to get into journalism, when there was an opportunity to be closer to what I want to be doing long-term, I had to take it.

Yay for more Prison Break love!

  • nomadreader (Carrie) August 8, 2011, 12:51 pm

Good luck on the move! I hope you have great weather for the drive and unloading!

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:46 am

Me too! It’s supposed to be pretty cool tomorrow, which would be great. But, I’ll take anything as long as there’s no rain.

  • softdrink August 8, 2011, 4:51 pm

I’m pissed at your gym on your behalf, too! What nerve!

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:46 am

I’m glad everyone else is as indignant as I was, at least I’m not entirely overreacting 🙂

  • Care August 9, 2011, 5:23 am

Wow – I was under the assumption that gyms charged monthly rates. Maybe only up here in Mass. Most around here go to the Y. Anyhoo. Sorry about that. Thinking of the books you could have purchased with the money must make you REALLY mad, huh?
And good luck on the name change. At least they probably won’t mind if someone else PAYS to the account but I understand wanting to be official. Good luck! Have you tried Tweeting your complaint for faster action?
    HAPPY MOVE!!!!

    • Kim August 9, 2011, 8:47 am

I do pay monthly, but the cancel contract fee is a three month buyout of the contract… ridiculous.

We did finally Tweet at AT&T last week, which got us moved into some complaint list, but so far that hasn’t really worked out. I’m going to call again today and see what is going on.

  • Jenny August 9, 2011, 5:58 pm

*cracks up* Whenever I am stressed I start mainlining TV shows too. It’s so bad. I can think the thought, Jenny, you are only watching this many episodes of Friends at once because you don’t want to pack, and yet I can’t make myself stop.

    • Kim August 15, 2011, 7:10 pm

That’s EXACTLY what I thought… except I skipped sleeping and packing and reading and blogging all so I could stare at Wentworth Miller. I finally finished though, so I can start in on some new television 🙂
